Asheville Simplifies Book Buying Through Social Media Technology in Response to Amazon Attack

Amazon’s most recent divergence from good corporate citizenship, asking customers to spy on local stores, outraged bookstores nationwide, and now has local businesses crying foul. Local Publisher and Bookstore Grateful Steps at http://www.GratefulSteps.com a non-profit publisher and bookshop with a focus on local and regional authors, is using Twitter technology to fight Amazon’s new scanning intelligence software and to make ordering books much simpler for everyone.

Grateful Steps at 159 S. Lexington Avenue, with 40 titles of their own and the ability to order any book, is asking their clients and the community to simply order books from them using their twitter address @gratefulsteps. “The $5.00 you might lose with Amazon would support local business and goes back in supporting the local economy through our real brick and mortar stores that pay taxes that benefit the public at large,” explains Laura Hope-Gill, Marketing Director for Grateful Steps, “ The Amazon move is a go-for-the-jugular marketing move. Our twitter idea is a way of demonstrating that people need people, they don’t need apps that hurt other people.”

Amazon’s newest ploy to undermine local economies consists of convincing consumers to download a bar-scanning application to their phones., then go to local stores and scan the store bar code on the items they are interested in purchasing. The application displays the cheapest price that item is available for on Amazon encouraging the customer to leave the store and order online, while also providing Amazon intelligence on local prices and consumer interest trends. Amazon apparently feels that providing a $5.00 reward pays for this consumer marketing study.

Book stores nationwide are viewing this as an attack on Mom and Pop businesses by a technology driven giant. Oren Teicher, the CEO of the American Booksellers Association, (ABA) recently wrote the CEO of Amazon Jeff Bezos stating, “…despite your company’s recent pledge to be a better corporate citizen and to obey the law and collect sales tax, you created a price-check app that allows shoppers to browse Main Street stores that do collect sales tax, scan a product, ask for expertise, and walk out empty-handed in order to buy on Amazon. We could call your $5 bounty to app-users a cheesy marketing move and leave it at that. In fact, it is the latest in a series of steps to expand your market at the expense of cities and towns nationwide, stripping them of their unique character and the financial wherewithal to pay for essential needs like schools, fire and police departments, and libraries.”

Bookstores, Publishers, and individuals around the nation have mounted a new “Boycott Amazon” campaign with some offering “Occupy Amazon” buttons, and others offering discounts to customers showing that they have cancelled their Amazon accounts.

Grateful Steps prefers to fight technology with technology. Hope-Gill says, “In this tech age, it comes down to keystrokes, using Twitter is faster than using a website, particularly Amazon technology, and has the added advantage of allowing people to immediately order a book upon learning about it in a conversation with a friend, in a newspaper review, or while watching a TV talk show, without worry of losing the information before placing an order with an online store.”

This Twitter concept was originally conceived by Gary Charles of G Social Media, to be used in restaurants allowing a simple method for dining rooms and customers to connect directly with the kitchen for orders, questions, and status on their dinner. Charles recently ran with this idea that will premier at Latin Flavor Restaurant next month. Then, inspired by a wish for new reading material, Gary Charles tweeted a few orders to Hope-Gill and picked up his books the following day. Upon meeting with Hope-Gill, the new idea of tweeting for books, and turning the tables on Amazon’s tech-heavy attack on small business, came to life.

Incidentally, Hope-Gill lived near Seattle when the online giant first put out a call for jobs, “Some of my friends applied and went on to make a lot of money, I couldn’t do it. It just felt kind of evil to me. Asheville Green Plumbing--Are they just after your hard earned green?

I've been hearing bad things about Asheville Green Plumbing. I talked to a friend that has a solar system, well, on demand heater, and other environmentally friendly devices. As you can imagine, he has a lot of plumbing needs.

The other day his pressure switch went out on the well and he decided to call Asheville Green Plumbing in order to support Green thinking and businesses. "This was a bad mistake,"he said, "the green they are talking about is the green in your wallet, they are anything but a green company."

What was the problem? "They came in and told me I needed an oddball part and would have to replace it--that involved him driving around his oversized gas guzzling van for an hour and a half. Returning he cut out my valve and replaced it with a new one, then put in a new T for the pressure switch. To my astonishment, he charged me 2hours 45min for labor and $100 for parts. Over $320 for what should have been a simple 1 hour job."

I thought about what he said and asked, "Well if it was an oddball part, maybe that wasn't such a bad deal."

"Riggght," he said, "The next day I drove to Lowe's and found the exact value they replaced for $35.00, for $15.97. Worse, I found a 1/4 plug that could have been inserted in my old valve without replacing it for $0.88. I bought the plug and returned back to my house in my small car in less than 1/2 hour. As I had demanded he give me the old valve, I screwed the 1/4 inch plug into the threaded tap where the old pressure switch used to be and solved the problem for less than a dollar, with a part they should have had on their truck! Calling Asheville Green Plumbers to complain was even more painful, I was informed 'we treat our customers very well.' Thinking back on the call, maybe he really said 'we cheat our customers very well'--that certainly would be more accurate."

Here are the key things that matter for your future in to the world of independent film.

1. Alternative Cinemas

Independent films are being screened in many different kinds of venues in a trend which may sweep the world. Digital screens allow art galleries, bars, pizza houses and other non-traditional cinemas to show alternative content.

What does that mean for independent shorts, features and documentaries? Look for these non-traditional outlets and perhaps your film will end up being screened in a pub, with drinks, networking and distribution contacts.

Stop Paying Taxes this Year, War Taxes now Exceed 50% of the Tax Load

The IRS has been ridiculed, feared and despised by virtually everyone for over a half century of its existence and for good reason; the code is illogical, inconsistent and incomprehensible to practically everyone including our own Secretary of the Treasury, Tim Geithner.

Geithner testified to the Senate confirmation hearings, that he used TurboTax to prepare his own return and that the tax errors are his own responsibility. The problem with TurboTax seems to stem from self employment issues of the tax code. The Washington Post quoted a tax expert who said that TurboTax has not been programmed to handle self-employment taxes when the user identifies himself as being employed.

Over nine of Obama’s top appointees had tax problems ranging from speaking fees, self employment issues and illegal house employees. But the problem for Obama and the IRS is becoming much bigger.

For one, is there even a law that requires taxpayers to file and pay taxes? It appears that there is no such law. Sure, the IRS as volumes of codes and regulations, but is there a law that requires US citizens to pay taxes on their income? No.

Recently the government has lost critical cases on tax law with Whitey Harrell and Tom Cryer winning their right to not file or pay taxes at all. Further, former IRS agents Joe Banister and Sherry Peel Jackson resigned after not being able to find a law that requires citizens to pay taxes.

Most of the tax controversies arise over the fact that the US government is lying to its citizens about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and organized torture and illegal detaining of so called terrorists. Currently over 54% of all taxes paid by US citizens are going to the war, military efforts and mostly to corporations that are benefiting from the war by creating ridiculously expensive tools, contractors, and equipment for the military.

These government lies result in a “Taxation without Representation” issue as even our corrupt lawmakers are lied to about the reasons to go to war and the cover-up of torture techniques used in secret and non-secret prison facilities around the world. No reasonable American citizen or their representatives would have voted to use tax dollars to buy water boards and professional torturers to create false confessions from detainees in secret prisons.

There is a remedy. Don’t pay taxes this year. If enough people refuse to pay for the illegal programs by our Federal Government, these programs will fail. Tax dollars should be used for the infrastructure of our highways, education initiatives, science and space explorations and other programs that are beyond the reach of individuals and state governments.

Ace Whitewater has unprecedented 2 deaths on the Gauley River in 3 days

Ace Whitewater, aka Ace Adventure Center or American-Canadian Expeditions Ltd, has had 2 deaths in three days of rafting the Gauley River this year. Previous to the three rafting deaths this year there had been 3 deaths in the last three years on the Gauley, two of which occurred on an ACE Whitewater Tour.

"It is sad and everyone is shell-shocked and searching and looking to see if there is anything we can do," said Mark Lewis, president of the Fayetteville-based West Virginia Professional River Outfitters. "To have three in one season is unprecedented to us.”

ACE Adventure Center’s own website explains that “The University of Colorado studied rafting safety for the years from 1990 to 1997. The University determined that the total fatalities (drowning and health related) during this time period was 0.23 fatalities per 100,000 user days. That is 1 death occurred per 428,953 user days. The average rate from drowning per 100,000 user days is 0.15 or 1 death per 674,069 user days. Non drowning deaths, encompassing heart attacks, respiratory problems, and other health problems, resulted in 0.08 deaths per 100,000 or 1 death per 1,179,621 user days.

By these statistics, for ACE, the American-Canadian Expedition Ltd, to have 2 deaths in just 3 rafting days would seem to raise a red flag in the industry as an extremely high number of fatalities in a single season and very few user days. Checking ACE’s safety record is also disturbing, the last posted DNR required records for accidents during the season, show that the American-Canadian Expeditions, (ACE) have the highest injury rate of all outfitters in West Virginia year after year. Ace Adventure Center likes to paint themselves as pioneers of extreme rafting trips and unusual adventures. There websites reports about Extreme Upper Gauley, Trip #17 that
“ACE pioneered this whitewater rafting trip over 15 years ago. At that time, using 12-foot rafts on the Upper Gauley was unthinkable.” Ace Adventure Center also pioneered the technical summer Gauley Rafting trips for boy scouts and other youths that resulted in a death on a scout trip in 2006.

Jerry Cook, the major partner at ACE Adventure Center, also pioneered a
trip that ended at a Class VI rapid (Big Wesser Falls) on the Nantahala
River in North Carolina in the eighties. The ACE website defines
Class VI as:
"Class VI
Nearly impossible and very dangerous. Can be run only by teams of
experts with significant danger to life."

The three deaths this year were reported as follows:
In the first accident, on Saturday, Sept. 12, Eric Clark, 40, of Circleville, Ohio, died after going into cardiac arrest. In the second accident, on Sunday, Sept. 27, on an ACE Whitewater guided trip, Eric L. Hampton, 32, of Louisville, Ky., was on a raft that flipped at Pillow Rock, the largest Class V rapid on the Upper Gauley River. The rapid is sandwiched between giant boulders strewn into the steep, rugged canyon directly below Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park. In the third death, also on an ACE Adventure Center guide trip on Friday, Oct. 2, a 30-year-old Fishers, Ind., man, Shane Loveall, died at Summersville Memorial Hospital after he fell from a raft into the Class V rapid called Lost Paddle and became pinned under water.

These unusual amounts of injuries and deaths on ACE Whitewater’s commercial trips may force Jerry Cook and the ACE Adventure Center to re-prioritize its passion for pioneering for a passion for safety although that has not appeared to be its major concern after the previous season’s fatalities. Ultimately this extreme season may prove to provide a challenge to the limit of liability imposed by the West Virginia Legislature. It may finally lead to the much needed stricter regulation of the West Virginia's whitewater rafting industry in the interest of safety and standards, to provide more consistent trips and the implementation of a guide license and standard training for guides, to help protect the state's large visitor base.
